Thanks for proving my point fellas. I hope someday you find peace and learn not to be in such a hurry to judge others.

I'm not going to argue with you guys but, to prove that I mean it when I say that I want you to be at peace, I'll explain what I mean. I don't think it's fair for the government to fine us for something that we MIGHT do. That proves my point about our freedoms being eroded away.

As for racism in Europe, I did try to explain my point on that a little better if you had read on. It's not that race is not a problem in Europe. My point was that people don't focus on it so much in their day-to-day lives. When I was in Spain teaching English my students, as well as teachers and local friends, didn't even know that race was such a big deal in America. In Europe people laugh at things that we take very seriously when it comes to this topic. The reason is because it hasn't been politicized there in the same way as it has here. People there don't have a stigma about race as we do. I hope that clarifies my point a little better.

On a side note, I think what you read in the news and what you experience on the ground are a bit different. I do think what Shibby pointed out about the situation over there is true in a broad sense but, unlike in America, people don't seem to be interested in arguing about these things. They may comment on them, or even discuss them a bit, but in my experience they don't care enough to argue.

Most of them fit into one of two categories: 1) They're mildly terrified of the concept of driving and think driving well below the limit and often unpredictably so makes them safer, 2) They're fucking around on their phone.

If you have to bend that far backward to explain to yourself why you should have enjoyed a show, it's possible that you didn't enjoy it.

I mean, it kind of sounds like she's not going to be dazzling with diamonds, so is opting to baffle with bullshit. And that's fine, but it also has A Serious Point to be made i.e. how remarkable it is that someone who's an artist would be queer, which then leaves a well-meaning reviewer more or less having to say, "I guess it's my fault that I didn't understand this," which it isn't, really.

I feel you Anon. I was especially chagrined that the city recently changed the dotted yellow lines on Prescott to solid yellow lines.

" most pf Old Town's privately-owned SRO housing was allowed to deteriorate into squalor"

Because it was filled with fucking poor ass people who didn't pay enough in rent to cover basic maintenance. This is what happens with rent control and low-income housing. Unless it is perpetually subsidized, it eventually turns into trash.

Tell us, Euphonius, which part of the budget should we take money from to direct it towards more subsidized housing? Schools? They are filled with lead and are overcrowded for the number of teachers we have. Roads? Portland's roads and sidewalks are riddled with potholes, cracks, and other things that are bad for cars, but more importantly very dangerous for bikers and pedestrians. Transit? We need more transit, not less, especially with a larger population and denser city.

And once the new amount of subsidized housing fills up, and more low-income people move to Portland because of its generous housing and social services policy, we will have spent a fuckton of money and still have the same problem of thousands of people on our streets. Homelessness is not something Portland alone can possibly solve.

Dudes, you all must be new here. This is how native Portland drivers have driven for decades. This is what they pine for when they talk about how Portland "used" to be - everyone driving at a goddamn crawl, and waiting 2 minutes at a 4-way stop for a politeness showdown of "No, you go..." "No, I really insist you go..." and then they get this stinky fucking look on your face when you just go rather than waiting because that is actually more efficient for everyone, even if it wasn't legally/technically your turn.

Don't even get me started about how Portland and Oregon drivers are some of the most prone in the country to camp out in the left lane of a freeway and think they are justified because they are matching or barely exceeding the speed limit.

"our city is so cheap any asshole can come in and take advantage of that"

The assholes who have lived in Portland for decades and failed to take advantage of the phenomenally cheap real estate because they wanted to work part-time at a secondhand store to pursue their crappy "art" or go to shows every night. We're supposed to care about their slacker loser asses getting displaced because....WHY? Because they, through no effort or initiative of their own, happened to be born in Portland instead of the thousands of other cities they might have been born in instead?

Portlanders are a special breed of whiny and stupid. Anyone who grew up here with half a brain could see the eventual demand coming from miles away, and planned and bought their piece of the city accordingly.
